pub struct SpinButton { /* private fields */ }
Expand description
A SpinButton
is an ideal way to allow the user to set the
value of some attribute.
Rather than having to directly type a number into a Entry
,
SpinButton
allows the user to click on one of two arrows
to increment or decrement the displayed value. A value can still be
typed in, with the bonus that it can be checked to ensure it is in a
given range.
The main properties of a SpinButton
are through an adjustment.
See the Adjustment
documentation for more details about
an adjustment’s properties.
Note that SpinButton
will by default make its entry large enough
to accommodate the lower and upper bounds of the adjustment. If this
is not desired, the automatic sizing can be turned off by explicitly
setting width-chars
to a value != -1.
§Using a GtkSpinButton to get an integer
⚠️ The following code is in c ⚠️
// Provides a function to retrieve an integer value from a GtkSpinButton
// and creates a spin button to model percentage values.
int
grab_int_value (GtkSpinButton *button,
gpointer user_data)
{
return gtk_spin_button_get_value_as_int (button);
}
void
create_integer_spin_button (void)
{
GtkWidget *window, *button;
GtkAdjustment *adjustment;
adjustment = gtk_adjustment_new (50.0, 0.0, 100.0, 1.0, 5.0, 0.0);
window = gtk_window_new ();
// creates the spinbutton, with no decimal places
button = gtk_spin_button_new (adjustment, 1.0, 0);
gtk_window_set_child (GTK_WINDOW (window), button);
gtk_window_present (GTK_WINDOW (window));
}
§Using a GtkSpinButton to get a floating point value
⚠️ The following code is in c ⚠️
// Provides a function to retrieve a floating point value from a
// GtkSpinButton, and creates a high precision spin button.
float
grab_float_value (GtkSpinButton *button,
gpointer user_data)
{
return gtk_spin_button_get_value (button);
}
void
create_floating_spin_button (void)
{
GtkWidget *window, *button;
GtkAdjustment *adjustment;
adjustment = gtk_adjustment_new (2.500, 0.0, 5.0, 0.001, 0.1, 0.0);
window = gtk_window_new ();
// creates the spinbutton, with three decimal places
button = gtk_spin_button_new (adjustment, 0.001, 3);
gtk_window_set_child (GTK_WINDOW (window), button);
gtk_window_present (GTK_WINDOW (window));
}
§Shortcuts and Gestures
The following signals have default keybindings:
§CSS nodes
spinbutton.horizontal
├── text
│ ├── undershoot.left
│ ╰── undershoot.right
├── button.down
╰── button.up
spinbutton.vertical
├── button.up
├── text
│ ├── undershoot.left
│ ╰── undershoot.right
╰── button.down
SpinButton
s main CSS node has the name spinbutton. It creates subnodes
for the entry and the two buttons, with these names. The button nodes have
the style classes .up and .down. The Text
subnodes (if present) are put
below the text node. The orientation of the spin button is reflected in
the .vertical or .horizontal style class on the main node.
§Accessibility
SpinButton

§Signals
§activate
Emitted when the spin button is activated.
The keybindings for this signal are all forms of the Enter key.
If the Enter key results in the value being committed to the spin button, then activation does not occur until Enter is pressed again.
Action
§change-value
Emitted when the user initiates a value change.
This is a keybinding signal.
Applications should not connect to it, but may emit it with g_signal_emit_by_name() if they need to control the cursor programmatically.
The default bindings for this signal are Up/Down and PageUp/PageDown.
Action
§input
Emitted to convert the users input into a double value.
The signal handler is expected to use EditableExt::text()
to retrieve the text of the spinbutton and set @new_value to the
new value.
The default conversion uses g_strtod().
§output
Emitted to tweak the formatting of the value for display.
⚠️ The following code is in c ⚠️
// show leading zeros
static gboolean
on_output (GtkSpinButton *spin,
gpointer data)
{
char *text;
int value;
value = gtk_spin_button_get_value_as_int (spin);
text = g_strdup_printf ("%02d", value);
gtk_editable_set_text (GTK_EDITABLE (spin), text):
g_free (text);
return TRUE;
}
§value-changed
Emitted when the value is changed.
Also see the output
signal.
§wrapped
Emitted right after the spinbutton wraps from its maximum to its minimum value or vice-versa.
Widget
§destroy
Signals that all holders of a reference to the widget should release the reference that they hold.
May result in finalization of the widget if all references are released.
This signal is not suitable for saving widget state.
§direction-changed
Emitted when the text direction of a widget changes.
§hide
Emitted when @widget is hidden.
§keynav-failed
Emitted if keyboard navigation fails.
See WidgetExt::keynav_failed()
for details.
§map
Emitted when @widget is going to be mapped.
A widget is mapped when the widget is visible (which is controlled with
visible
) and all its parents up to the toplevel widget
are also visible.
The ::map signal can be used to determine whether a widget will be drawn,
for instance it can resume an animation that was stopped during the
emission of unmap
.
§mnemonic-activate
Emitted when a widget is activated via a mnemonic.
The default handler for this signal activates @widget if @group_cycling
is false
, or just makes @widget grab focus if @group_cycling is true
.
§move-focus
Emitted when the focus is moved.
The ::move-focus signal is a keybinding signal.
The default bindings for this signal are Tab to move forward, and Shift+Tab to move backward.
Action
§query-tooltip
Emitted when the widget’s tooltip is about to be shown.
This happens when the has-tooltip
property
is true
and the hover timeout has expired with the cursor hovering
“above” @widget; or emitted when @widget got focus in keyboard mode.
Using the given coordinates, the signal handler should determine
whether a tooltip should be shown for @widget. If this is the case
true
should be returned, false
otherwise. Note that if
@keyboard_mode is true
, the values of @x and @y are undefined and
should not be used.
The signal handler is free to manipulate @tooltip with the therefore destined function calls.
§realize
Emitted when @widget is associated with a gdk::Surface
.
This means that WidgetExt::realize()
has been called
or the widget has been mapped (that is, it is going to be drawn).
§show
Emitted when @widget is shown.
§state-flags-changed
Emitted when the widget state changes.
§unmap
Emitted when @widget is going to be unmapped.
A widget is unmapped when either it or any of its parents up to the toplevel widget have been set as hidden.
As ::unmap indicates that a widget will not be shown any longer, it can be used to, for example, stop an animation on the widget.
§unrealize
Emitted when the gdk::Surface
associated with @widget is destroyed.
This means that WidgetExt::unrealize()
has been called
or the widget has been unmapped (that is, it is going to be hidden).
CellEditable
§editing-done
This signal is a sign for the cell renderer to update its value from the @cell_editable.
Implementations of CellEditable
are responsible for
emitting this signal when they are done editing, e.g.
Entry
emits this signal when the user presses Enter. Typical things to
do in a handler for ::editing-done are to capture the edited value,
disconnect the @cell_editable from signals on the CellRenderer
, etc.
gtk_cell_editable_editing_done() is a convenience method
for emitting GtkCellEditable::editing-done
.
§remove-widget
This signal is meant to indicate that the cell is finished editing, and the @cell_editable widget is being removed and may subsequently be destroyed.
Implementations of CellEditable
are responsible for
emitting this signal when they are done editing. It must
be emitted after the GtkCellEditable::editing-done
signal,
to give the cell renderer a chance to update the cell’s value
before the widget is removed.
gtk_cell_editable_remove_widget() is a convenience method
for emitting GtkCellEditable::remove-widget
.
Editable
§changed
Emitted at the end of a single user-visible operation on the contents.
E.g., a paste operation that replaces the contents of the selection will cause only one signal emission (even though it is implemented by first deleting the selection, then inserting the new content, and may cause multiple ::notify::text signals to be emitted).
§delete-text
Emitted when text is deleted from the widget by the user.
The default handler for this signal will normally be responsible for deleting the text, so by connecting to this signal and then stopping the signal with g_signal_stop_emission(), it is possible to modify the range of deleted text, or prevent it from being deleted entirely.
The @start_pos and @end_pos parameters are interpreted as for
EditableExt::delete_text()
.
§insert-text
Emitted when text is inserted into the widget by the user.
The default handler for this signal will normally be responsible for inserting the text, so by connecting to this signal and then stopping the signal with g_signal_stop_emission(), it is possible to modify the inserted text, or prevent it from being inserted entirely.
